Five minutes in Cantonese is "one character", and "two characters" is ten minutes.
It's not that the time it takes to recite a word is as long as five minutes, but that the 12 numbers represented on the clock extend from one word to exactly five minutes.
For example, the time we made an appointment was "Luk dim loeng go zi", which means it was about 6:10.
When a friend meets up and asks how long it will take to arrive, the answer is: "three words"; but I don't know what three words people would ask in reply, "fifteen minutes", it is obviously four words.
Another example is when I have to go out and I am asked how long it will take while I am dressing up.
Answer "two words", which two words, "ten minutes"!
Literally it’s just three words? ?
Cantonese can also be expressed more simply, even the "word" is omitted, and you can directly say: 10:3 (10:15), 8:1 (8:05).
Language is really interesting, and each place has its own special usage, but these are really localized, and people who rarely use them may not understand it clearly.
Just like the Taiwanese language in Taiwan, there are many interesting things, but if you don’t speak it often, you will also forget how to say those common sayings!
