The war of 1895

Some historical stories always tell us how people in the past have pushed Taiwan to what it is today. There are never quiet years, but there are people who carry the burden forward on their behalf, for fear that the Taiwanese themselves will give up on themselves!

In 1894, the "Sino-Japanese War" broke out between the Qing Dynasty and Japan. The Qing government was defeated and the "Treaty of Shimonoseki" was signed, ceding Fujian and Taiwan Province to Japan. In May 1895, scholar Qiu Fengjia and others established the "Taiwan Democratic Republic" and elected Tang Jingsong as president, with the reign name Yongqing.

On May 29, the Guards Corps led by Prince Nohisa Kitashirakawa landed in Aodi, preparing to take over Taiwan. After the Guards Corps captured Keelung, on June 11, Lukang native Ku Hsien-rong welcomed the Japanese troops into Taipei City on behalf of the Menga gentry.

After the Japanese army occupied Taipei, they began a policy of marching southward. The Hakka Volunteer Army led by Wu Tangxing, because they were familiar with the mountainous terrain and adopted guerrilla tactics, had repeatedly won victories against the Japanese in Taozhumiao and other places. The prince realized the stubbornness of the Taiwanese people and declared that this was not acceptance, but war.

Substituting the above characters and current events, it seems that history has been repeating itself in Taiwan over the past four hundred years, although it has been in tatters every time and has been plagued by many different internal and external troubles.

Often it is two steps forward, three steps back, and sometimes the steps are a little too big. Although there is a step back, at least it is still moving forward slowly.
